Abstract

The comparative study on fruit quality of eight mature-green eating mago cultivars namely ‘Malila’ ‘Tongdum’ ‘lin Ngu Hou’ ‘Kiew Sawoey’ ‘Read’ ‘Pimsen Mun’ ‘Nong Saeng’ and ‘Mun Haew’ was investigated in reation to their physical and chemical characters. The results showed that Malila had the highest fruit weight and largest fruit weight and largest fruit volume. The specific gravity of the fruit was found significantly different among these cultivars with Mun Heaw, Lin Ngu Hoa and Tongdum had the specific gravity greater than 1.0 and high vitamin C content (28.75-30.74 mg/100 g fresh weight) while Malila, Kiew Sawoey, Raed and Nong Saeng had the specific gravity lower than 1.0 and low vitamin C content (15.42-19.55 mg/100 g fresh weight). Mun Haew, Nong Saeng, Lin Ngu Hou and kiew Sawoey were the cultivars having high ratio of total soluble solids/titratable acidity (15.37-25.68) but Tongdum, Pimsen Mun and Read cultivars had low ratio of soluble solids/titratable acidity (7.42-7.66). These mangoes had total nonstructural carbohydrates ranged from 510.54 to 8.6.54 mg D-glucose/g dry weight. Cultivars with low ratio of total soluble solids/titratable acidity tended to have low total nonstructural carbohydrates.

Abstract

Genetic diversity and relationships within Thai litchi cultivars were investigated using RAPD (random amplified polymorphic DNA) and AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) markers. Fourteen RAPD primers and seven AFLP primers were chosen, resulting in amplification of 52 and 101 reproducible polymorphic fragment products, respectively. The percentages of polymorphic markers for RAPD and AFLP were 34.6% and 36.3% respectively. Each marker system was able to differentiate all accessions. Even each of the AFLP primers could identify all accessions, while the RAPD markers did not show such efficiency. The polymorphism information content (PIC) scores were calculated for each of 52 RAPD and 101 AFLP polymorphic fragments. It ranged between 0.16 to 0.50 for RAPD markers and 0.22 to 0.50 for AFLP markers. Unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic averages (UPGMA) dendrograms using Jaccards coefficients reflected no clear cut grouping based on neither morphology nor climatic adaptation. However, both dendrograms showed that the 47 litchi accessions could be classified into groups between when the similarity coefficients were as low as 0.37 for RAPD marker and 0.25 for AFLP markers. Two accessions (LH80 and LH109) were found to be genetically very far distant from the other accessions using both markers. RAPD and AFLP marker analyses provided a quick and reliable alternative for identification of litchi accessions and determination of genetic diversity among them.

Abstract

The study on growth and development, biochemical changes and harvesting index of mango (Mangifera indica L.) cv. Tongdum grown at Pak Chong, Nakorn Rajsima was carried out at the Laboratory of Horticulture Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Kasetsart University during November 1984 to October 1986. The results showed that the growth pattern of seed and fruit followed the simple sigmoidal curve. The period from 50% bloom. The mature fruit weighed 270-343 g. Titratable acidity (TA) was high in the first two weeks and decreased thereafter. Total soluble solids (TSS) content was very high at the early stage of fruit development and decreased to the low level in the tenth week after that period. The TSS content gradually increased when the fruit approached maturity. Vitamin C content increased from the first two weeks and reached the maximal level in the fourth week. Thereafter the content decreased again. Reducing sugars and total nonstructural carbohydrates contents were high in the first three weeks and the amount increased rapidly after the tenth week till harvest. Reducing sugars content gradually after the thirteenth week. The mature fruit harvested at about 97-106 days had the specific gravity higher than 1.00. Heat units, fruit firmness and TSS/TA ranged from 778.80-873.65 centigrade degree days (CDD), 19.21-19.87 kg/cm2 and 7.28-8.33 respectively. When the fruit was ripened, fruit firmness ranges 1.18-1.32 kg/cm2 whereas TSS/TA ratio ranged from 42.79-49.48 ?-carotene content was between 4,935-6,109 ?g/100g fresh weight and the flesh color was grey-orange 163-168 group B-C. Record of fruit age from 50% bloom to harvest, specific gravity and heat unit can be recommended as harvesting indices of this Tongdum cultivar.
